vintage classic

VINTAGE CLASSIC — a unique and evocative production by Nrityam — was envisioned as a refreshing departure from the conventional framework of traditional Odissi repertoire. While deeply rooted in the aesthetics of classical dance, this production explored a different creative dimension, seamlessly blending the grace of movement with the nostalgia of Indian cinema.

The production took the audience on a captivating journey through the golden eras of Hindi cinema, spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s — a period often regarded as the soul of cinematic artistry. Beginning with the poetic simplicity and monochrome elegance of black-and-white classics, it gradually unfolded into the vibrant, expressive, and colourful world of later decades.

Each segment was carefully curated to reflect the distinct flavour of its time — the innocence and lyrical beauty of the 50s and 60s, the evolving rhythms and emotions of the 70s and 80s, and the dynamic, expressive storytelling of the 90s. Through thoughtfully adapted choreography, iconic melodies were reimagined, bringing together cinematic expression and classical sensibilities in a harmonious dialogue.

The dancers of Nrityam embodied not just movements, but moods, characters, and emotions — celebrating the evolution of music, style, and storytelling in Indian cinema. The production stood as a tribute to an era that continues to inspire generations, while also showcasing the versatility of dance as a medium that transcends boundaries.
