MAHISHASURA MARDINI

MAHISHASURA MARDINI - a Nrityam Production

[ Year 2021, 2022, 2024 ]

Nrityam’s Mahishasuramardini is a distinctive artistic initiative by Nrityam Odissi Dance Centre, conceived in the year 2021 with the vision of presenting powerful mythological narratives through the medium of dance drama. The production was created to celebrate the divine feminine and to explore the many manifestations of Shakti, the eternal cosmic energy that represents strength, compassion, and transformation.

While the title draws inspiration from the iconic Mahalaya invocation of Mahishasuramardini, the production goes beyond the single episode of Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. The choreography and storytelling weave together different mythological narratives associated with the divine feminine. Through dance and dramatic expression, the production explores the stories and symbolic presence of Durga, Kali, Uma, and Sati, highlighting the various forms and emotions of Shakti — from nurturing and compassionate to fierce and protective.

The first presentation in 2021 received an overwhelming response from viewers and well-wishers, who deeply appreciated the devotional atmosphere, expressive choreography, and mythological storytelling. Inspired by the encouraging response, the production was presented again in 2022, reaching audiences who connected strongly with its spiritual and cultural essence.

Continuing the journey, the initiative returned once more in 2024, reaffirming its significance as a meaningful cultural offering that celebrates mythology through the language of dance. Each presentation of Mahishasuramardini presents mythological episodes through carefully crafted dance drama, combining expressive movement, narrative interpretation, music, and visual aesthetics to create a deeply evocative experience.

More than just a performance, the production aims to connect audiences with the timeless idea of Shakti in her many divine forms, reflecting the philosophical and spiritual richness of Indian mythology.

Nrityam’s Mahishasuramardini is an initiative by Lipi Chaudhury and Neeladyuti Chaudhury, whose artistic vision and dedication continue to shape the production as a significant creative endeavour that merges devotion, mythology, and the performing arts.

Through this initiative, Nrityam Odissi Dance Centre continues its commitment to preserving and presenting India’s mythological heritage while creating meaningful artistic experiences for contemporary audiences.
