Chitrangada
A NRITYAM PRODUCTION
CHITRANGADA – STORY OF THE WARRIOR PRINCESS

(After Rabindranath Tagore, presented in a unique confluence of Folk nuances and Odissi aesthetics)
“Chitrangada”, the celebrated dance drama by Rabindranath Tagore, composed in 1892, finds a powerful reimagining in this evocative production by Nrityam. Rooted in the timeless narrative of the Mahabharata, the story unfolds the poignant and transformative journey of Princess Chitrangada of Manipur and her encounter with Arjuna, the valiant third Pandava.

This production delicately blends the lyrical depth of Tagore’s vision with the sculptural grace of Odissi and the earthy vitality of folk movements, creating a distinctive visual and emotional language. It moves beyond conventional repertoire to explore the layered identity of a woman who is at once a warrior, a lover, and a sovereign.
Set against the mystical and verdant backdrop of ancient Manipur, the story traces the life of Chitrangada—born to the king under an extraordinary boon granted by Lord Shiva. Destined to have only male heirs, the king defies fate when blessed with a daughter, raising her as a son and grooming her in the disciplines of warfare, statecraft, and valor. Chitrangada grows into a fearless warrior, embodying strength, resilience, and leadership.
Meanwhile, Arjuna, during his exile, arrives in Manipur. His encounter with Chitrangada marks the beginning of a profound emotional awakening within her. For the first time, the warrior princess confronts her own femininity, vulnerability, and longing for love.
Tagore’s interpretation elevates this narrative beyond a mere tale of romance. It becomes an introspective exploration of identity—where Chitrangada grapples with her dual existence. In her quest to win Arjuna’s love, she undergoes a transformation, embracing an externally adorned femininity. Yet, the journey ultimately leads her to a deeper realization—that true acceptance lies not in illusion, but in the courage to reveal one’s authentic self.
Nrityam’s Chitrangada is envisioned as a rich tapestry of movement, music, and expression. The choreography seamlessly interweaves:The lyrical expressiveness of Odissi, with its fluid torso movements and intricate abhinaya
Folk idioms and stances, reflecting the cultural essence and grounded vitality of the land
Dramatic storytelling, bringing alive the emotional conflicts and inner transformation of the protagonist
The production emphasizes bhava (emotion) and rasa (aesthetic experience), allowing the audience to journey alongside Chitrangada—from her strength as a warrior to her vulnerability as a woman, and finally to her emergence as a complete, self-aware individual.
At its core, Chitrangada is a celebration of womanhood in its fullest sense. It transcends time and tradition to address universal themes:
The quest for identity
The balance between strength and sensitivity
The courage to embrace one’s true self
Love as a force of transformation and realization
Tagore’s Chitrangada is not merely a character—she is a symbol of completeness, where courage and compassion coexist, and where authenticity triumphs over illusion.
