SUMMER WORKSHOP
The Annual Summer Workshop at NRITYAM : Odissi Dance Centre is a much-awaited intensive training programme that harmoniously blends learning, discipline, creativity, and cultural immersion. Conducted every year during the summer break, the workshop is designed to offer students focused and in-depth training beyond regular classes, enabling them to refine their technique and deepen their artistic sensibilities.
The Summer Workshop provides a structured yet immersive learning environment, where students participate in extended practice sessions under the close and dedicated guidance of Smt. Neeladyuti Chaudhury. Special emphasis is placed on body conditioning, postural alignment, stamina, flexibility, and strength, all of which are essential for mastering the nuanced and demanding vocabulary of Odissi dance.
A major component of the workshop is intensive technical training, which includes:
* Detailed revision and strengthening of Odissi basics
* Precision in Chowka and Tribhangi
* Systematic practice of Chari and Bhramari
* Application of Hastas and Viniyoga
* Development of rhythmic accuracy through taal-based exercises
Alongside technical refinement, special focus is given to Odissi item training, where students delve into facial expressions, eye movements, emotional transitions, and narrative depth. These sessions aim to enhance expressive clarity, rasa internalisation, and abhinaya sensitivity. During the course of the Summer Workshop, students typically complete one or two Odissi repertoire items, enabling them to fulfil the requirements for certification and academic progression.
The workshop also serves as a vibrant platform for repertoire expansion and choreographic exploration. Students learn new Odissi items or work intensively on selected segments of the repertoire, while senior students are introduced to special choreographic works, thematic presentations, and creative explorations firmly rooted in classical aesthetics.
Complementing the practical sessions, the Summer Workshop includes theory-oriented classes, covering important aspects such as:
* Odissi music and the Tala system
* Interpretation of lyrics and sahitya
* Cultural and spiritual contexts of Odissi dance
* Introduction to classical texts and iconography
One of the most distinctive features of NRITYAM’s Summer Workshop is its strong emphasis on discipline, dedication, and collective learning. The programme nurtures a sense of camaraderie and artistic bonding, encouraging students to grow together through shared effort, mutual respect, and creative dialogue.
The Annual Summer Workshop often culminates in an internal presentation, demonstration, or performance, offering students valuable stage exposure and the opportunity to translate their intensive training into a performance setting.
Through this immersive and rigorous programme, NRITYAM reaffirms its unwavering commitment to preserving the purity of the Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra Gharana, while nurturing dancers into technically accomplished, emotionally expressive, and culturally rooted artistes.
