Jagannath Rath Yatra

Celebration of Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra & Bahuda Dashami at NRITYAM

At NRITYAM – Odissi Dance Centre, the annual celebration of Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra is not merely an event; it is a deeply immersive spiritual and cultural experience that brings together devotion, tradition, and collective joy. Every year, NRITYAM recreates the sacred atmosphere of Srimandir, Puri, with utmost reverence, authenticity, and heartfelt participation. This sacred puja and its associated rituals are lovingly hosted every year at the residence of our Director/Principal Neeladyuti Chaudhury, transforming her home into a sanctified space reminiscent of the divine atmosphere of Srimandir, Puri.

The celebrations begin with the observance of Snana Yatra, where Lord Jagannath, along with Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, is ceremonially bathed following traditional rituals. The entire space is transformed through intricate decorations, symbolic arrangements, and sacred preparations essential for the puja. From crafting the altar to arranging flowers, bhog, chandan, and ceremonial items, students take complete responsibility, learning not only the rituals but also the values of seva, teamwork, and devotion.

The highlight of the festivities is the Rath Yatra, where Lord Jagannath proceeds to Mashir Bari (New Town Branch) in a beautifully adorned palanquin, symbolically representing His journey to the abode of His devotees. With great enthusiasm and spiritual fervour, students joyfully pull the rath, sing bhajans, and offer prayers, recreating the sanctity of the divine journey. The Lord stays at Mashir Bari for one week, just as in Puri, allowing devotees to experience His accessible and compassionate presence.

After a week of joyous anticipation, NRITYAM celebrates Bahuda Dashami (Ulto Ratha) with equal splendour. The return journey of the Lord is observed with full adherence to the customs followed at Sri Jagannath Temple, Puri. The atmosphere resonates with devotion as rituals are meticulously performed, culminating in the grand Sunavesha, marking the divine homecoming of the Lord in all His resplendent glory.

A unique and soulful aspect of both the Rath Yatra and Bahuda Dashami processions is the inclusion of dance offerings by the students. As the Lord proceeds in procession, students perform Odissi dance to the sacred verses of Jayadeva’s Geeta Govinda—a timeless devotional offering that has been traditionally associated with Lord Jagannath. Through movement, rhythm, and abhinaya, the students express bhakti, surrender, and divine love, transforming the procession into a moving spiritual celebration.

What makes NRITYAM’s celebration truly special is that every aspect is envisioned, prepared, and executed by the students themselves—from rituals and decorations to music, dance, and processions. This collective effort fosters a deep sense of belonging, shared happiness, and spiritual growth across all branches of NRITYAM.

Through these annual celebrations, NRITYAM not only preserves and honours the rich traditions of Jagannath culture, but also instils in its students the essence of devotion, discipline, cultural responsibility, and joyous service—keeping alive the eternal bond between Nritya (dance) and Bhakti (devotion).
