Rooted in the evocative verses of Bijay Gupta’s Padma Purana and enriched by the vibrant oral traditions of the Manasa Mangal Kavya, Manasa – The Rise of the Serpent Queen is an ambitious and deeply expressive Odissi dance production that brings to life the compelling journey of Devi Manasa—the enigmatic serpent goddess.

Born from the sheer will and meditative power of Lord Shiva, Manasa emerges as a radiant yet unacknowledged force of divinity. Raised in the mystical realm of Naga-loka, she grows in strength and awareness, yet remains deprived of her rightful identity and recognition. This inner turmoil shapes her destiny, as she seeks acceptance not only from the celestial world but also from humanity.

The narrative unfolds through a dramatic interplay of divine will and human resistance, centering around Chand Saudagar, a proud and devout worshipper of Mahadev. His refusal to offer worship to Manasa ignites a powerful conflict—one that transcends ego and devotion, and ultimately reshapes fate itself.

Interwoven within this divine conflict is the poignant and timeless saga of Behula and Lakhindar—reborn from celestial beings and bound by a curse. Their union, shadowed by prophecy, becomes a symbol of eternal love and sacrifice. When Lakhindar falls victim to Manasa’s wrath on their wedding night, Behula embarks on an extraordinary journey across turbulent waters and cosmic realms, carrying her husband’s lifeless body with unwavering determination.

Her journey culminates in the celestial court, where through the profound language of dance, she expresses her grief, devotion, and surrender. Moved by her unparalleled faith and strength, Lord Shiva intervenes, and Manasa’s heart softens. Life is restored—not only to Lakhindar but to his brothers as well—marking a turning point in the goddess’s own transformation.

The final resolution arrives when Chand Saudagar, in a moment of humility, offers a symbolic puja to Manasa. Though subtle, this act signifies her long-awaited acceptance, establishing her as a revered deity among mortals.

Musically, the production is a rich confluence of classical depth and emotive expression. Under the sensitive and evocative music direction of Joydeep Sinha, the score weaves together traditional Odissi soundscapes with dramatic intensity. The soulful vocals of Joydeep Sinha and Aratrika Chaudhury lend emotional depth to the narrative, while the rhythmic brilliance of the mardala by Pratik Mukherjee anchors the choreography with precision. The melodious flute by Rick Mukherjee adds a lyrical dimension, and the keyboard textures by Bhavesh Modak enhance the atmospheric quality of the performance, creating an immersive auditory experience.

Through intricate choreography, expressive abhinaya, and a thoughtfully crafted musical score, Manasa – The Rise of the Serpent Queen emerges as a powerful exploration of identity, resilience, feminine शक्ति, and divine justice. It is not merely a retelling of a myth, but a profound artistic journey—where rejection transforms into reverence, and a forgotten goddess rises to claim her rightful place in the hearts of people.
