Annual Examination

Nrityam Annual Examination System

Nrityam believes that systematic evaluation is an essential part of a dancer’s artistic and academic growth. With this vision, Nrityam conducts its Annual Examination (not compulsory) to encourage students to assess their progress in Odissi dance in a structured and meaningful way.

Nrityam is affiliated to Rabindra Bharati University through the Uttar Kolkata Charukala Society, and the annual examinations are conducted strictly as per the guidelines and academic framework of Rabindra Bharati University. This affiliation ensures that students receive a recognized and credible certification that reflects both practical excellence and theoretical understanding of Odissi.

Comprehensive Training: Theory & Practical

Preparation for the annual examination is a well-planned and detailed process at Nrityam. Students are trained extensively in both:

  •  Practical Odissi dance (technique, repertoire, abhinaya, rhythm, posture, and presentation)
  • Theory of Odissi, including history, terminology, talas, ragas, costume, ornaments, and aesthetic principles

    To support this, students receive:
    Extra practice sessions
    Guided home-practice tutorials

Well-structured study materials designed specifically for the examination syllabus
Master music tracks for syllabus items to ensure precision and uniformity

This holistic approach ensures that students are not merely preparing for an exam, but deepening their understanding of Odissi as a classical art form.

Eligibility & Examination Guidelines

A minimum of 80% class attendance is mandatory to be eligible for the annual examination.
Eligibility also depends on the student’s age, discipline, and overall progress, which is carefully assessed by the teacher.
The teacher’s decision regarding eligibility and level placement is final and binding, maintaining academic integrity.
The minimum age to appear for the examination is 7 years.
Examination fees (annual exam fee + course fee) are announced separately by the institution and may include study materials, master music, and costume elements (if required).
Structured Academic Progression
The examination system at Nrityam follows a continuous academic journey of classical dance education, aligned with university standards:
Preliminary Course – 3 years
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. in Odissi) – 5 years
Master’s Degree (M.A. in Odissi) – 2 years
This structured progression helps students build a strong foundation first, followed by advanced technical, aesthetic, and academic mastery.

Theory Examination Process

Students are strongly encouraged to study and appear for theory papers seriously.
Theory examinations are conducted in online mode, as per university norms.
Open-book examinations are not encouraged, ensuring genuine learning, discipline, and academic honesty.
Students are guided thoroughly to develop conceptual clarity and writing skills required for university-level theory papers.

Online Mode for Outstation & International Students

Nrityam proudly supports students who are:
Residing outside West Bengal
Living abroad or in different countries
Such students can complete the certification through online mode, including theory and practical guidance, and will receive a digital certificate issued by Rabindra Bharati University upon successful completion of the examination. This ensures that distance is never a barrier to quality classical dance education.

Examination Conduct & Discipline

Annual examinations are conducted offline at any of Nrityam’s branches, as decided by the institution and university.
In case a student is unable to appear due to medical reasons, prior intimation via email along with valid medical documents is mandatory.
Any use of unfair means during the examination will lead to immediate disqualification, maintaining the sanctity of the examination process.

A Journey Beyond Certification

At Nrityam, the annual examination is not just about certificates—it is a journey of discipline, dedication, self-evaluation, and growth. Each examination marks a milestone in the dancer’s evolving relationship with Odissi, preparing them academically, artistically, and emotionally for a lifelong engagement with this classical tradition.

Awards, Recognition & Academic Encouragement

Apart from the University certification awarded by Rabindra Bharati University, Nrityam believes in recognizing dedication, discipline, and excellence at the institutional level as well.
Students appearing for the annual examination are internally assessed, and those securing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions within the institute are honoured with the Nrityam Award of Excellence. These awards are a token of appreciation for consistent effort, artistic growth, and academic sincerity.
The formal felicitation ceremony is conducted during Nrityam’s Annual Day celebration, where students are awarded in the presence of gurus, parents, peers, and distinguished guests. This moment of recognition not only boosts confidence but also inspires younger students to strive for excellence in their own journey of dance.

Encouragement for Higher Studies in Performing Arts

Nrityam strongly encourages students to pursue higher education in Performing Arts, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and research-level studies in Odissi and related disciplines.
Students are guided and mentored for:
B.A. and M.A. degrees in Odissi
Advanced academic understanding of classical dance
Balancing performance, pedagogy, and theory
Preparing for future careers in performance, teaching, choreography, research, and arts administration
Through a combination of rigorous training, academic discipline, and exposure to university-level examinations, Nrityam aims to nurture dancers who are not only skilled performers but also knowledgeable, confident, and academically empowered artists.
